Career Search from Within

By Teresa Proudlove Seeking meaningful and fulfilling work can become a discouraging, confusing and overwhelming journey. Beware spending too much time looking for your answers outside of yourself. Ultimately, coming to know our right livelihood is the inner work of our whole being. In order to nurture our well-being and come to our right livelihood; it is best to frequently pause and halt the busy “doing and thinking” process. Pause, relax and trust. This runs contrary to the belief espoused within the employment industry of “looking for a job is a full-time job.” Woe upon those who follow this motto. Follow the Voice of Your Heart If we push ourselves non-stop into our career/job search (or within our jobs/lives) how can we hear the voice of our heart? The small still voice within is buried under a constantly busy mind and hectic life - so applauded by our society. I am not advocating that we wait for manna from heaven to supply our answers. We need to do our research and seek the help we may need in order to make wise choices. However, I have found great value in pausing and waiting rather than trying to force a decision or an action. Try it. Through pausing and exercising patience much is often revealed to us. Also, by pausing, relaxing and trusting we are aligning ourselves moment by moment with our heart and our God. How do we distinguish between the voice of our God and that of the busy-mind pushing us along - often driven by the underlying insecurity of being human? As Robert Johnson, Jungian analyst and author of “Balancing Heaven and Earth,” says; “How do we know if we are truly following the will of God? One knows instinctively; there is a sense of peace, balance, and fullness, an unhurriedness.” From my own experience I would add there is a clean, direct simplicity to my small, still voice. Also, if the voice directing me from within is harsh, hurtful or driven by fear I know with certainty this is NOT the voice of my God. Finding work that is meaningful and fulfilling is not something we ‘figure-out,’ abdicate to external forces, nor something we push ourselves to do. Rather, it is more a process in time wherein we come to know and trust our deepest desires, intuition and clarity of mind. Coming to know our right livelihood involves our whole being. Seeking the Slender Threads Seeking the slender threads weaving our lives can also lead us toward meaningful work. What are the slender threads? “Being in a particular place at just the right time, meeting someone who steers you in an unforeseen direction, the unexpected appearance of work or money or inspiration just when they are most needed. Whether called fate, destiny or the hand of God, slender threads are at workweaving the remarkable tapestry of our lives.” Robert A. Johnson, Balancing Heaven and Earth. Viewing my own life I see how those slender threads - chance meetings - patterned decades of my life. I see how some of my best career choices came about through some great benevolent force guiding me, connecting me to necessary people and experiences more so than my well-made plans or goals. All I did was get the information I could, put myself out there and then, follow the little steps revealed to me. If you are in job search or looking for career direction put yourself “out there” and be open to slender threads. Participate in free local employment programs - looking and listening for unexpected connections or clues. Pay attention to meaningful words that suddenly catch your attention or replay in your mind whether from a passing stranger, friend, dream, song, TV show, book title, or. Tell everyone you meet you are in career change, soul searching, job searchfind your own words. In a sentence or two let them know what you enjoy doing, what your skills are, what interests you or where you would like to work. Ask if they can think of a job title that might suit someone like you, or where you might apply for work, or who else could they suggest for you talk to. People love to help if we will but open ourselves to their generosity. Take little steps. Pause, relax and trust your small inner voice. Look for the slender threads weaving the majestic tapestry of our lives. Herein, follow the guidance toward your right livelihood. Teresa Proudlove is the publisher/editor of http://www.yourlifework.com encouraging people to listen to their inner guidance, be gentle with themselves and practice present moment awareness. Herbal Medicine: An Ounce Of Prevention

By Priya Shah In recent years the issue of Alternative Healing has taken the medical world by storm. A 2004 government survey concluded that more than one third of adults use some form of alternative medicine and healing. Many of those using alternative therapies do not even discuss them with their traditional healthcare practitioners. One facet of this burgeoning interest is Herbal Medicine. While it may seem “trendy” to some, Herbal Medicine has been around for thousands of years. In fact, many of the familiar pharmaceutical medications we use today were originally created from “natural” ingredients. Drugs like opium (from poppies), aspirin (from willow bark), digitalis (from foxglove) and quinine (from the cinchona tree.) What is Herbal Medicine? Herbal Medicine is the use of botanicals (plants) either singularly or in combination to prevent and treat certain ailments and illnesses. People native to different geographical locations have long used plants and plant extracts to cure specific maladies. Sometimes referred to as “folk” medicine, it is generally recognized that there are three schools of research one can follow with regard to the history of these treatments. There is the study of medicines based on Greek, Roman and medieval sources, which is largely used by Western schools of thought, Ayurveda which comes from India, and the Eastern tradition of Chinese Herbal Medicine. Rather than separation, these different schools of thought provide more commonality than division. It stands to reason that most ancient peoples used plants that were native to their geographical location, which provides sound reasoning as to why different schools of thought exist. All three of these modalities at one time included both philosophical and spiritual aspects along with the scientific knowledge that existed within a specific time frame. In the study that determined one third of Americans used alternative therapies, the same number surveyed showed a dramatic increase in positive results to more than 60% when “prayer” was included in the mix. Ayurveda, loosely translated to “knowledge of life,” is the ancient Indian system of medicine. Dating back to more than 6,000 years ago, Ayurvedic Medicine practiced not just Herbal Medicine, but some of the earliest surgical procedures as well as inoculation. Over the years Ayurvedic Medicine became increasingly symptomatic as opposed to treating the root cause of disease, which originally was steeped in strengthening the immune system With all our so-called advancements in the medical field, its interesting that physicians are still treating “effect” rather than “cause.” The old adage that, “an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure” could not be more true. This is especially true when it comes to natural remedies. Nothing in the makeup of a plant tells us in what way it would be used the best. There are over a half million known herbs that could be used as possible remedies. Chinese Herbalist practitioners have over 2,000 herbs that are readily available in their pharmacies. Herbal remedies around the globe very in strength from the very mild and gentle remedies that are use even as food, to those that are potential poisons when taken at the wrong dose. Folk use of herbal remedies is familiar to all of us in some form or another. This is because herbal remedies are learned by being passed down from generation to generation. Unfortunately this hearsay is what fuels the ire of the scientific community and their disdain. But by dismissing generations of experience and observation, it is really the traditional scientific community which is losing out on this wisdom. In recent times, attitudes toward traditional and herbal remedies have changed for the better. Many medical schools now offer studies in complementary medicine alongside traditional medical courses. Its only a matter of time before herbal medicine becomes part of a more holistic practice of healthcare. Copyright 2005 Priya Shah Priya Shah is the editor of The Glutathione Report. Low Carb Madness - Three Traps to Avoid

By Carol Solomon Sign on a pizza restaurant: Get Your Carbs Here! Low Carb everything! I could see the value in reducing carbs LONG before it became the latest craze. The fact that new products are being developed is a good thing. Manufacturers have been forced to make changes, such as increasing fiber in breads and pastas. (I am still waiting for low-carb fettuccini alfredo ;-). Reformulating products to contain less sugar and still taste good generally seems like a positive change. There are, however, some things to watch out for: 1. Artificial sweeteners have long been controversial and associated with negative side effects. Some people say they increase appetite and thirst, and stimulate the insulin response. People often report that using products with artificial sweeteners slows weight loss. I recently bought some “light” orange juice, only to discover later that it was only 60% juice and contained artificial sweeteners. All the more reason to read labels carefully to make informed choices. When one ingredient is removed, something else has to replace it. Is it something you want? Next time I want “light” juice, I will dilute it myself and leave out the artificial sweeteners. 2. One of the biggest traps for the low carb era is to avoid what happened when low fat diets were popular. When we were advised to eat low fat, we did NOT snack on celery and carrots. We munched on “low-fat” cookies, pasta, and bread, thinking that we were saving fat and calories, but ended up eating more. “It’s low-fat, I can eat all I want.” (Remember this logic?) Same with carbs - it is easy to think that because something is low carbs, the quantity doesn’t count. 3. Yet another trap is the fact that restricting ANY category of food can stimulate the urge for that food like nothing else. Not eating carbs anymore? Gotta have ‘em! It becomes the ‘forbidden fruit’ (for more on this, see Lose Weight Now . . . Stay Slim Forever, page 8). While as you know, I do not count ANYTHING, I try to avoid the traps. It’s still smart to pay attention internally and LISTEN what your body is telling you. The body doesn’t lie. Drop 35 Pounds A Year Just By Changing The Way You Snack

By Lee Dobbins Just because you are watching your weight doesnt mean that youre going to be eating a snack here and there and, in fact, eating smaller meals or healthy snacks In between meals can actually help boost your metabolism. Even if youre not on any type of diet plan but still want to drop a few pounds you can do this easily by changing the types of snacks that you eat. Lets say you have a snack in between breakfast and lunch, another one in between lunch and dinner and another one later night - thats three snacks today. Now lets say that you choose for the snacks a bag of chips, a candy bar or cookies. Each one of these snacks is probably 250 to 350 calories. Now, if you replace the snacks with healthier snacks of around 100 calories youll be able to lose weight even if you dont not change any of the other things that you eat! Switching to healthier snacks is not only better for your waistline its better for your overall health to. Now instead of eating 800 or 900 calories worth of snacks today youre only eating 300 or 400 calories worth which is a savings of around 500 calories a day which can really add up. Given that theres about 3500 calories In a pound if you really did shave off 500 calories a day you could be losing a pound a week! So the next time you reach for snack, think about being good to your hips and your health by choosing one of the healthy, low calorie snacks: Apple slices with peanut butter are a great healthy snack as long as you choose all natural peanut butter that doesnt have additives and especially sugar added. Go easy on the peanut butter, though as it is fatty ( healthy fat, but using too much can really pack on the calories). I like to cut the Apple open to slices and spread a thin layer of peanut butter in between two slices like a sandwich. Fresh fruit is a great healthy snack and can help curb those sugar cravings. Fruits to have sugar but the body can metabolize them easier than the processed sugar, high fructose corn syrup in other nasty elements in process snack foods. Some great healthy choices for fruits include blueberries, pomegranate seeds, strawberries and cantaloupe. If youre a chip lover then you might want to think about switching to soy chips which will help curb your cravings for crunchy foods and will also add some protein into your diet which can help you feel full longer. Yogurt can be a great healthy snack if you choose the right kind, and in fact, recent studies show that eating low-fat dairy products can help you to lose even more weight. You need to choose yogurt that has no sugar added and not the kind that has the blobs of fruit that you stir up as this will be loaded with sugar. The best pick is organic yogurt that has live cultures which can give your digestive system some of that good bacteria that it needs to work properly. Just because you are trying to lose weight doesnt mean that you should avoid snacks altogether, in fact eating more smaller meals during the day will help you feel full longer and less deprived as well as keep your metabolism revved up for more weight loss. You just need to pick snacks that are low in calories and fat and healthy! Lee Dobbins writes for Low Carb and Low GI Resource where you can learn more about eating the right foods to help you lose weight. College Graduation Gifts

By Eric Morris What can be more momentous and exciting as a college graduation? This is the moment every college student has been waiting for. From freshman to graduate, the road to success is certainly not easy. Thats why graduation is an occasion that calls for a celebration. Graduating from college also holds a special significance. For most people, this is the final graduation they will ever go through, a rite of passage into the real world. Thus, it is just fitting and proper to reward the successful graduate with a gift that is not only recognition of his achievement but also wish of good luck for the many future plans he is about to undertake and realize. What would be the perfect gift to present to a successful college graduate? Of course, you can give any gift you want: a new car, jewelry, a trip to a popular destination, techie gadgets, and many more. But picking the perfect gift requires more than just shelling out the bug bucks. Choosing the best gift involves careful thought and knowledge of what the graduate truly wants or needs. You can also give something that will be very useful in their new career or new school, whichever is applicable. You can also give a sort of memorabilia or souvenir to preserve the memory of the occasion. A graduation gift need not be too expensive. But a prestige gift will definitely be highly appreciated maybe a new watch, a new business suit or a fine writing pen. Probably the best gifts you can give a college graduate are those which they can use in their new career; perhaps a leather writing portfolio or a laptop computer will do. A trip will also be well-regarded since most graduates will certainly need a respite, even if brief, before entering the corporate world. How Do You Prevent Sabotage

By Josue Cano Have you ever gone on a diet and decided to lose weight and get in shape? Maybe you went forward with your goal and started eating healthier and working out. Your first couple of days you were feeling good about yourself. You feel proud and maintain your current rhythm. Then, comes weekends where you go out with friends and hangout at places you know you are easily tempted by the choices on the menu. Before you know it, you sabotage. You start asking yourself…why? ‘Why can’t I be disciplined?’ ‘Why did I just eat that junk food?’ When you ask yourself those questions your brain will come up with an answer. Usually the answer is you don’t have will power. Or you don’t have motivation. You then rationalize yourself that you messed up and that you just didn’t have the will power to follow through on your goals. Your self-esteem goes down and you’re not as motivated to pursue your goals. Eventually, you’ll lose all motivation to continue forward and quit. What can we learn and improve on following situation. I’ll tell you. What we do know is this; when you ask yourself a question your brain will respond by giving you an answer. We also know that asking ourselves why is useless. Asking yourself ‘why’ is the most useless thing that you can do!!! So don’t do it. Instead, ask yourself a more empowering question that is going to really help you and not make you feel worse. One of the most powerful questions you can ask yourself is how. Asking yourself, “How can I overcome this situation? How can I stay focused so I don’ lose motivation?” Ask how. I am reminded of a situation where I was in a stressful situation where I was with a large group of friends from church and we all went out to eat. We went to a pizza place and all I knew is that I didn’t want to feel the guilty feelings by sabotaging my goals. I didn’t want to experience the consequences of weight gain by participating with my friends. What did I do? I asked myself how. I said, “How can I overcome this?” So I made an active choice to not eat pizza with them. And also, I didn’t judge my friends for doing so. Did I want to eat pizza? Absolutely. Did I eat pizza? Nope. But the stress of wanting to eat pizza was very tempting. To experience the pleasure of eating that cheesy, greasy pizza was very apparent. In all, I didn’t sabotage. After everyone was done eating pizza my sister shared with me that she felt guilty after eating pizza. I was the only one who didn’t participate with them eating pizza. How did I feel afterward? Did I feel like I missed out? I felt so good about myself for keeping my goals and I didn’t feel like I missed out. Actually, I had gained a notch on my scale of self-esteem. And I felt proud of myself for being able to overcome such a stressful situation. How? By asking how. “Cap” Josue Cano B.A. C.S.C.S., is a specialized strength and boxing trainer working 1-on-1 with clients who just authored the book: Don’t wait get in S.H.A.P.E.: drop body fat fast and get fit quick. Don’t Hold a Grudge Against Me!

By Verona Raymond We all need to be cautious and not make quick judgements! The thing that really bothers me is being accused of something I didnt do and having that person hold a grudge against me. You know the feelinghelpless! Or you might think that somebody intentionally did something to hurt you, and you want to accuse or judge them based on your feelings. As a child, some of my friends secretly poked fun at the other kids in the neighborhood walking down the street and I told them to stop. When they finally confronted all of us, they wouldnt believe that I wasnt doing the same thing! Right, like they were going to believe I had nothing to do with it when the evidence was very clear! If you feel that someone has said or done something behind your back or even to your face, it still isnt a very good practice to treat them badly or keep ignoring them. The Bible warns that it is not right to judge people: Therefore thou art inexcusable, O man, whosoever thou art that judgest: for wherein thou judgest another, thou condemnest thyself; for thou that judgest doest the same things. Romans 2:1 I feel God is trying to say that we shouldnt judge others because we, in turn condemn ourselves because we are not perfect. We sometimes have done the same thingsin other words I would be an utter hypocrite to judge someone! The Bible goes on to talk about grudges: Grudge not one against another, brethren, lest ye be condemned: behold, the judge standeth before the door. (James 5:9). For I know nothing by myself; yet am I not hereby justified: but he that judgeth me is the Lord. 1 Corinthians 4:4. The only one who can judge us is the Lord. He knows the situation completely, inside and out! Much more thoroughly than what we are capable of seeing. So the next time somebody holds a grudge or accuses you of something, dont take revenge or get upset. Try to forgive and pray for them, and pray for God to give you the strength to stay strong. Dont let the situation keep bothering you to the point that you never let it go. Once you do forgive them, youll feel much better and you can get on with your life the way the good Lord intended. DIY House Moves: Five Ways to Make Sure Your Stuff Stays Intact

By Sharon Hurley Hall With 20 moves in 25 years, Ive learned a thing or two about moving house. Here are five steps you can take to make sure that all your belongings arrive with you. 1. Wrap it up To avoid breakages, wrap your fragile items very carefully. The best packing items are newsprint and bubble wrap. If you can get it, beg or buy large sheets of unprinted newsprint or ends of rolls from your local printer. (When we did this, the roll we got saw us through three moves). If you cant youll have to start saving your Sunday newspapers (the bigger, the better) the minute you put your house on the market. Bubble wrap is also a safe, clean alternative, and if you get bored, you can pop a few bubbles while you wrap. Electrical items are best transported in their own packaging if youve got it, or bubble wrap if you havent. Sharp knives and toasting forks should also be wrapped so no-one gets hurt. All mattresses should be wrapped, otherwise youll be sleeping on dirt for years. Theyre quite heavy, and youll usually drop at least one corner. Black garbage bags and packing tape are useful for wrapping large items such as these, but even better are big dust sheets from your local hardware store. 2. Get stuffed Cups, mugs and glasses should be stuffed inside before being wrapped. That provides an extra layer of protection. Anything with a delicate handle should have that wrapped separately before wrapping the whole item. Lids to milk jugs, sugar bowls and teapots should be wrapped separately. And remember, with wrapping, more is more: the more stuff you put around your stuff, the more likely it is to survive the move intact. I havent lost a cup yet. 3. Space saver Line the bottoms and tops of your crockery boxes, as well as any nooks and crannies with old tea towels. This provides more protection for your breakables and packs the towels as well, and youll have the satisfaction of having killed two birds with one stone. 4. Open spaces OK, there are a lot of items you wont be able to do without, but that doesnt mean you have to leave the packing till the last minute. Pack your canned foods in boxes but dont seal them. That way, you can easily get hold of something you suddenly find you need. 5. Delete the junk When youre moving things out of the loft or basement, use this as an opportunity to clear out anything you havent needed in the last two years. If you dont need it, why move it? The same goes for the garage (does anyone keep a car in there?) and for the garden shed. Be ruthless, or youll end up with backache for nothing and have to throw it away on the other side. Moving is also a good excuse for losing that unwanted gift from five years ago. Final words Follow these five steps and all your stuff should arrive safely. Happy moving!
